About the Data

How this works and what you should know before using it.

Where does the data come from?

All inspection data on this site comes from San Diego County's Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ), which publishes inspection results at sdfoodinfo.org.

San Diego County inspects approximately 14,000+ retail food facilities on a routine basis to monitor compliance with the California Retail Food Code. Inspection results are public record under the California Public Records Act.

Grayte is an independent consumer transparency website. It is not affiliated with San Diego County, DEHQ, or any government agency. We do not modify the inspection data — we display it with source links so you can verify everything directly.

What do the grades mean?

A

Satisfactory (Score 90–100)

The facility is in satisfactory compliance with state law. An A grade is the standard expected result for well-run facilities.

B

Needs Improvement (Score 80–89)

The facility has violations that need to be corrected. A B grade often triggers a follow-up re-inspection within 14–30 days.

C

Failing (Score 79 or below)

Serious violations were found. A C grade may result in a closure order until violations are corrected and a re-inspection passes.

Violations and corrections

When a violation appears on this site, it was observed by a county inspector on the date listed. Many violations are corrected on-site or immediately after inspection. The county's own disclaimer states that a violation does not become an “error” when it is corrected — the inspection record remains historical data.

If a facility receives a re-inspection after correcting violations, that re-inspection result is also shown in the inspection history. Look for the most recent routine inspection to understand the facility's current standing.

Closures

A “closure” means a county inspector ordered the facility to stop operating at the time of inspection due to conditions that posed an immediate public health risk. Most closures are temporary. Facilities typically reopen within a few days after violations are corrected and a follow-up inspection confirms compliance.

Grayte never implies that a facility is currently closed unless real-time data confirms it. All closures shown include the inspection date and a note that current status should be verified at the source.

How often is data updated?

Data is fetched from sdfoodinfo.org on a weekly schedule. The County updates the inspection database as new inspections are completed, typically within a few business days of the inspection date.

Found an error?

If you believe a facility's grade card contains incorrect information, please check the original record at sdfoodinfo.org first. If the source data appears correct but our display is wrong, report it here.
